Ridley Scott’s Robinhood is not interested in the legend but in how the legend was created. Like a superhero origin story, they start from the beginning. The story introduces us to Robin Longstride in 1199 fighting alongside Richard the Lionheart in France. The King is on the last leg of the Crusades, “bankrupt and plundering his way back to England” (not quite the Richard we are accustomed to). Here we are introduced to Robin who is a moral man of honor and not afraid to fight. Cate Blanchett’s Marion adds another feisty and interesting dimension to the story. The performances are good but if you go looking for the Robinhood who took from the rich and gave to the poor you might be disappointed.
