Joan Didion Documentary

While the whole world devours Stranger Things 2, a brilliant documentary on writer and cultural icon, Joan Didion, may have flown under your radar. Streaming on Netflix, Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold is directed by the celebrated essayist’s nephew, Griffin Dunne, and charts her incredible life and career over more than 50 years. A writer of novels, screenplays, and cultural criticism – not to mention a fashion figure whose 60s style has inspired countless imitators – Didion has plenty of stories to tell, from navigating the literati scene of 1950s New York, to partying with Janis Joplin.

The documentary combines amazing archive footage (60s style lovers take note), along with interviews with “Aunt Joan” and her friends and collaborators, including Anna Wintour, Vanessa Redgrave and Harrison Ford (who was her carpenter back in the 70s. For real). Didion’s extraordinary tales – not to mention her unparalleled coolness and talent – make documentary gold. Make sure it’s next on your Watch List.
