Movie : Victoria & Abdul

movie

I’ve been fascinated with European Court lately and of course everyone knows I love India. This movie completely pulled me out of my nest and I ventured out to the Angelica the other night with a friend. Yes, I’ve become a Netflix Junky, and with Apple TV and Fire stick, who needs to go out to a movie? Well this film is worth the trip. Beautifully filmed, very funny, and a true story. Interesting enough, the British Monarchy tried to bury this event until Abdul’s private diary was discovered in 2010. Judi Dench will most like receive Many awards for her brilliant acting. Enjoy!!!

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

Frears hasn’t just made an historical recreation; he has made a movie containing a message with universal implications for all places and times when racism rears its head. Victoria and Abdul is about showing the foolishness of demeaning others purely on the basis of skin color or cultural/religious differences. Frears isn’t just telling a pleasant story about an unusual friendship; he’s asking us to take a look at whether we have advanced as far in 120 years as we believe we have. The question lingers after the movie is over
