Jeep : Truck Release

Who remembers the movie St. Elmo’s Fire? That movie came out in 1985 and after seeing the film, I knew I wanted a Jeep. I was able to purchase my 1985 CJ7 that same year.

While a lot of cars can credit the postwar manufacturing boom, expanded highway system, and increasing quality of American life for both their inspiration and success, none can trace their lineage to World War II as directly as the Jeep Wrangler.

Though Jeep acknowledges no formal relationship between the Wrangler and the Jeep CJ it replaced, the connection is unmistakable. The Willys Jeep was used by American forces during the war, and its short wheelbase, flat, slotted grille, removable top, and fold-down windshield all became defining characteristics of the civilian version, the CJ (“Civilian Jeep”), when it was introduced in 1944. Civilians liked the concept for the same reasons soldiers did: They were utilitarian and durable, and their short wheelbase and high ground clearance made them nimble and capable where roads were bad, or nonexistent. The Jeep Wrangler has been on sale for over 30 years, and it just had its best month ever.

Jeep hasn’t sold a pickup truck since 1992, when the XJ Cherokee-based Comanche went out of production. Since then, Jeep has made many concept pickups to tease us. Now, we know that a JL Wrangler-based pickup is on its way, and it’s high on our list of cars we can’t wait to drive. To say we’re excited for the Wrangler pickup would be an understatement.
