Red, White and Boom on the Bridge

From the Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge, you get a beautiful view of the Trinity River levees, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and the downtown Dallas skyline. It’s one of the finest views in Texas. Launch some fireworks and now you’ve really got a sight. That’s the premise of this free festival, which runs this July 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. (fireworks shortly after dark) at the bridge formerly known as the Continental Avenue Bridge.

Parking is available in the parking lot located at 109 Continental off of Canada Drive.

Until recently, there was nothing “pedestrian” about Ron Kirk, the Lakewood Resident and ebullient public figure whose political trail can be traced from Dallas City Hall to the Texas State Capitol to the White House.

But that changed when the Dallas City Council renamed the Continental Avenue Bridge over the Trinity River after the city’s first and only elected African-American mayor.

His election as Dallas’ mayor in 1995 was historic. And his two terms were marked by several big-ticket items he pushed, including the Trinity River Corridor project and the development of American Airlines Center, which anchored Victory Park.

But for many, Kirk was, above all, a powerful symbol of progress – a personal bridge from the segregated and racially divisive Dallas of old, to the new Dallas, where an African-American could land at the head of the political table.
